What’s worrying you?

Sometimes the stress or anxiety we feel are being caused by something happening in your life – money worries, your job, a bereavement. Getting support for these life challenges might help get you back to a better place.

Relationship issues

Unfortunately, relationships don’t always last forever and this can really mess you up emotionally. When a relationship breaks down it can be tough for everyone involved and extremely complicated that you can start to feel like it’s the end of the world. Its important to take time for yourself to process all that is going on. Trying to maintain a good diet and exercise will really help. Meeting up with that mate for a bit of a laugh or a kick around in the park can also help you cope as taking a break from the serious stuff will help make you stronger. Bereavement

If someone important to you has died it is normal to grieve and be impacted by this. Although everyone grieves differently men can react very differently to women when someone dies, which is totally normal. It can help to learn more about how you might behave and feel as well as things that might help you through.

Drugs, Alcohol and gambling

Men are more likely than women to turn to unhelpful coping strategies when stressed, worried, or feeling down as men tend to prefer practical ways to cope. Turning to alcohol, taking recreational drugs or gambling can feel like a quick fix giving temporary relief but it doesn’t help to solve the original problem and can actually make things worse.  We don’t have to be addicted for alcohol, drugs and gambling to make us feel worse. It can help to learn more about positive practical ways that can calm your mind leaving your head clear to find a solution to what’s bothering you

Stressed

A small amount of stress is good for us but being stressed all the time can damage our health. Men and women react differently to stress possibly due to a combination of biological differences with hormones and different expectations due to culture and society norms. Anxiety

Anxiety is a feeling of fear or panic which is totally normal in certain situations such as a job interview or even something positive like getting married or having a baby. But sometimes anxiety can take over getting in the way of enjoying our lives. Men and women experience anxiety differently.  Men are more likely to experience physical symptoms such as being tense, irritable and having trouble sleeping leading to anger and unhelpful coping strategies such as alcohol and drugs to avoid their worries.

Depression

It’s normal to feel sad, down, moody and angry from time to time especially if you are going through a tough time. Anger

Anger is a response we developed to help us survive and is a normal reaction to a variety of situations. It’s healthy to express anger but we need to do this in a way that doesn’t harm ourselves or others. As men tend to prefer more practical coping strategies it can be useful to think about healthy ways to channel your anger such as sports, being active, and distraction techniques like listening to music or fixing something.
