Are You Joining Movember?
November is Men’s Health Month, a time to focus on all things men’s health and well being. Wondering why this matters? Take a look at these eye-opening facts below:
Vital Stats:
- Globally, we lose 60 men every day to suicide.
- In Halton, 75% of all suicides are men.
- Shockingly, 1 in 5 men don’t make it past 65, often due to preventable reasons.
Why is it that men, on average, live four years less than women? We all know that society puts undue pressure on men to just “man up” and get on with things. In reality, everyone needs to feel love and make meaningful connections, especially men. We understand that improving mental health and helping men create stronger social connections can reduce the risk of suicide.
In the UK, services often struggle to communicate effectively with men, only offering talking therapy as a way of opening up. This may work for some, particularly women, but it might not suit some men. This can make it more challenging for men to open up when something is not right in their life.
What we know is men are more likely to talk about what’s bothering them, whether it be a lump they have found or that they are struggling with their finances, when they are doing something like an activity.
Movember’s goal is to raise awareness of how men communicate and how we can support them when they do. Check out this video highlighting how a man might behave if he is struggling.
